Universiti Malaysia Pahang’s (UMP) Muhammad Norshim Mohamed Hashim and his teammates – Nurizzudin Ahmad Hussin, Tuan Shahlan Tuan Safie, Abdullah Muhamad Nawi and Mohd Azizul Hafiz Abdul Sani – did the university proud when they collectively bagged RM50,000 cash after securing the top spot at the National Bestari Chess Challenge held at Persada Johor on January 17. Calling themselves Gempak Team 1, UMP accumulated the highest number of prizes whilst simultaneously breaking the championship’s record. Aside from the cash prize, Gempak Team 1 also took home two trophies, a plaque, and participation and record-breaker certificates. They also took home the grand prize, a Proton Persona 1.6. The key to the car was handed over to the team leader, Muhammad Norshim, by the Chairman of KFC Holdings (Malaysia) Bhd, Tan Sri Muhammad Ali Hashim. KFC Holdings and Johor Corporation jointly organised The Bestari Chess Challenge, aimed at inculcating the spirits of creativity and innovativeness among the country’s undergraduates. Such collaboration, also hoped to generate visionary leaders among these undergraduates. Universiti Teknologi MARA Melaka went home with second place, taking with them a cash prize of RM30 000, a plaque and certificates of participation, while Federal Territory KFC took the third spot with RM20,000 cash, a plaque as well as certificates of participation.
