Over 800 people from all walks of life attended the Chap Goh Mei dinner, jointly organized by the Chinese Cultural Association, and Universiti Malaysia Pahang’s (UMP) Department of Students Affair & Alumni, held at the Mexica Seafood Restaurant in Kuantan on February 28. The dinner was held in celebration of the Prime Minister’s conceptualized 1Malaysia-Chinese New Year (CNY). According to the Programme Coordinator, Wong Kok Keen, the dinner was a cheerful showcase of Malaysian unity, spiced up with the musical performances of UMP Orchestra and cultural dances by students of various ethnicities, local and foreign. The night was further livened up with medley of songs and the staging of a drama and the 1Malaysia cultural dance. “Earlier in the day, the Association also took the opportunity to hold banner paintings, calligraphy competitions, as well as quizzes, "The joint CNY celebration helps introduce UMP to the general public, showcases students’ talents and fosters closer interactions between students and the surrounding communities"

A colouring competition was held at UMP’s Main Lecture Hall 1, where Tengku Puteri Jihan Khalsom Athiyatullah, 7, the daughter of Pahang Royal Consort, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, took part, representing Kuantan Methodist Girls’ School. “This joint CNY celebration has also helped introduce UMP to the general public, showcased students’ talents and fostered closer interactions between students and the surrounding communities,” Wong added. Jamie Khoo Hui Sun, 33, from Kuantan said that the celebration simply shows that UMP students are well-rounded undergraduates who could hold racial and religious programmes regardless of their diversed cultural backgrounds. A student from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering from UMP’s Pekan Campus, Sigithasan Nagantheram, could not contain his jubilation at being able to join in the CNY celebration and witness the merriments among people of various races all in one spot. Prizes for the day’s competitions were presented by the Head of Deputy Registrars, from UMP’s Department of Research & Innovation, Datin Fazia Ali. She is also the wife of UMP’s Vice-Chancellor.
