Research is an important process to develop a new technology for the human’s life. The world today is now more connected, complex, and changing more rapidly. People nowadays are really depending on the new high technology to do their activities every day.
As the technology improved, social structures are changing, including values, attitudes and minds. The competitions are rising. People are no more living in the backwards and under poverty as before. They are more trending according to their life style.
The purpose of research is to invent a new technology that helps people to adopt with their every day’s life. The new technology can make their work become easy, saving time and energy and also increasing the production output.
Through technology, a businessman can expand their business to the large scale. They can generate much profit on that rather than using traditional method. For example, the using of technology in agricultural sector, learning and teaching method and lots more.
One of a technology that I still remembered until today is the using of trawlers as a mechanism to catch a lot of fish in the sea. If I am not mistaken, the technology was introduced in 1970’s and I was in form five at the time.
The trawlers were using to increase the number of fish caught by the fisherman. It was good because they had caught many fish rather than using nets.
However, I started wondering if the trawlers can destroy the eco system in the sea and damage their habitat. What will happen to the number of fish population in the coastal area? Definitely their numbers will decrease and lead to the imbalance in the eco system.
Then, other years ago, I pursued my study in University Science of Malaysia and followed Aquatic Biology. I did some researches in several coastal areas in our country. I found the numbers of fish population were decreasing and absolutely it was something upsetting me.
My thought was real. The using of trawlers affected the aquatic habitat and also deteriorates their eco system. Until today, we no longer found many species of fish because of our fault. Some of the technologies also could destroy our lives if we failed to control them properly.
As I remembered, when I was kid, I lived near Mersing and always play on the seaside. The fish ‘Belanak’, ‘Kurau’, and ‘Siakap Merah’ could be easily caught by your hand because they were so tame.
Thus, from the example above, I think the researcher should think the good and bad side before develop the trawlers. Yet, it can be a model to the other researchers in developing a technology that could equalize to our living system. Should keep in mind, the fish is our valuable treasure that must be preserved.
However, I am very thankful that the problem is raising issues from many sides like fisherman associate and consumer associations. They want the using of trawlers would be banned. I am glad because the issue has been taken by the government and those who are using trawlers can be charged under act.
Thus, in my opinion, we could save the fish population by building a pond’s made that located from the seaside to seashore in effort to encourage the number of fish population. By using the rock block, we should be able to provide a ‘Tukun’ so that the fish could reproduce the breed.
On the other hand, instead of using traditional method, we could also provide with high technology system which could provide lots of profit without endangering the aquatic habitat.
We should come out with a cylinder that can call the fish by using light intensity (LUX) or frequency (talon) sound apparatus. This method is not harmful to the fish, but friendlier to them because not using harsh approach like trawlers to get they attracted. Fortunately, Japan did it and it is proven they are success with the way.
Nonetheless, there is some of my opinion about innovation in the research field. As a researcher, we have to come out with idea that constructs the community and do not ever destructs. Thus, as an Associate Professor in University Malaysia Pahang, I am glad and always motivate myself to improve something quality and beneficial for better live Malaysian. I love Malaysia!
